In April 1999, The Flaming Lips played at Electric Ballroom in Camden Town,
London. It's been 3 years since I saw them last time in 1996. That show
was really magical with a big Chinese Gong and unbelievably beautiful songs.
But the most astonishing truth was that Steven played Keyboard and Guitar,
instead of drums.
Back to January 1996, The Flaming Lips played at The Garage in London.
Steven set his drums in the middle and (!) in the front of the stage. Can
you imagine that? The audience could touch his drums and feel the vibrations
directly from his drums. They all went mad and I can never forget these
sounds and the crazy tableau that only The Flaming Lips could create.
I was totally impressed by his musical talent and so curious about his
musical background and the source of his creativity. I have never met a
musician like him. His extraordinarily powerful drumming, ethereal piano
sound and reflective guitar playing combined to create a unique sound.
He has the most beautiful tunes in his head. I really wanted to interview
him for so long and my mission was accomplished in a way at Leeds Metropolitan
University, on 11 May 2000.
