ああ、オースティン、テキサス…。ああ、オースティン…。 この地名を口にするだけで、なぜこうも気持ちが高揚するのだろう。ニューヨークでもなく、ロサンゼルスでもなく、オースティン、テキサス…。ここを拠点としている（拠点とした）バンドも多いせいか、アメリカを旅するならば「オースティンは外せない！」と思っているのだが、地球の歩き方（アメリカ篇／因みに私が持っているのは90〜91年版。古い！）にはほんの数ページしか掲載されていないのでござるよ…。まぁ、何を血迷ってかオクラホマを旅した自分としては、数ページ情報があるだけでも「ありがたき幸せ」と本に向かって拝みたい気分だけれど（笑）。 テキサスの州都であり、大学都市であるオースティンは、3月になると街全体がSouth By South West（SXSW）フェスティバル一色になる。クリエイターたちとのディスカッション、映画上映など、エンターテインメントのショーケースをしているのだが、SXSWが名を馳せている理由は何といっても音楽だろう。世界各国から何百というバンド/アーティストがオースティンに集い、またオーディエンスも世界各国からつめかける。そして、誰もが飲んだくれ、barflyになるのだろう（笑）。無論この中には、未来の金の卵を求め、レコード会社の目も光っているのだけれど。 というわけで、PUKKA読者のアメリカ人、ZAZEN JOE HARDPUNCHER君がSXSWに突撃するということで、「レポート書いてください！」とメールしたところ、「俺でよければOKだぜ！」という快い返答。この大規模なフェスティバルを隅から隅までレポートするのは難しいのだが（笑）、Puncher君からSXSWの雰囲気を味わえ、とっても「俺は音楽が大好きだぁ！」というレポート到着。そして、オースティン、テキサス、やはり面白い人間多いですわ！ 長距離バス、グレイハウンドでオースティン入りした（確かポートランドからだったかな？そうだとしたら、非常に遠いです！！）ZAZEN JOE HARDPUNCHER君、たった「ひとり」で、どこか哀愁を漂わせたSXSW放浪記、「読んでいくと妙に惹かれたわ。音楽が好きだっていうのと、彼が「ひとり」だという感じ。この中で、彼はホールデン・コールフィールドかも知れないね」（by Good Child）という印象が、何だか文学的に感じた次第。 さて、筆者が（個人的に）見たかったバンド/アーティストは下記通り。くぅ〜、羨ましいぜぃ、SXSWオーディエンス！でも、全て見るには、身体がいくつあっても足りないのぅ。 The Polyphonic Spree、Aqualung、Architecture In Helsinki、Blonde Redhead（今年のフジロック参加決定）、Bill Callahan（２月の来日公演見逃してしまった…）、Fujiya & Miyagi、The Gossip、 Kinski、moe.、Money mark、qui with David Yow、The Rapture, Rickie Lee Jones、The Sunshine Underground、Sparklehorse（日本に来て欲しいけど来ない…）、The Young Knives、The Holloways、Tokyo Police Club、Cold War Kid、Badly Drawn Boy、Do make they think、Bloc Party、Gruff Rhys、Hopewell（Pukkaインタビュー読んでください！）Apple In Stereo、The Good, The Bad & The Queen、The Bird and The Bee、Kevin Ayers、＋/−、Boris、Mogwai etc… 因みに、オフィシャル・サイトに全バンドがリスト・アップされているが、アメリカのバンドってアホな名前多い！特にテキサス出身バンドはヤバイです！それを見つけて大笑いするのも楽しみのひとつ（笑）。 さて、来年のSXSWは2007年3月7日〜3月16日開催決定。SXSWに興味を抱いたア・ナ・タ、早目にスケジュールを立てて、オースティンでどっぷり音楽に浸かってくだされ！そして機会があれば来年もSXSWに行くであろうZAZEN JOE HAUDPUNCHER君と心の交流を！ |

March 14th I rolled into Austin on greyhound bus at about 6 a.m.: Wednesday morning, the day the festival started! I was riding the bus all day the day before, so I didn't eat any food besides out of bus station vending machines. Of course I was very hungry! I decided that since Austin is a college town, there must be 24-hour restaurants around. So I left greyhound station, got on the city bus and rode downtown. Well, I got off at 3rd or 4th street, and I thought I should try to find where all the bars that bands would be playing at were, on 6th street, so I start walking. I got so hungry on the way! so I stop in convenience store to buy 1 Honey Bun, 2 bananas and 24 ounce cappuccino. It's a little bit better than vending machines and the cappuccino is really good! Then I went on to 6th street, the streets are still empty of course, the sun was just starting to come up then, but all the walls and lampposts are covered with posters for concerts and parties, a good sign I thought. Anyways after that, I walked down by the river to sit on a bench and read the newspaper, wait for music to start. When I got hungry again, I went and found a good restaurant to eat a Burrito, then I went back to 6th street to see if anything happened. It's around noon then. Wow!! It's a lot different. Suddenly a lot of people everywhere! Mostly white kids, all with the same hair and tight jeans, some brought their girlfriends dressed the same. Really weird to see so many people looking the same in one small place. Also weird to think that all of them were probably here because they're in bands. Most of the bars are still empty or closed, but there was a few bands playing here and there. I sat to listen to Reggae and talk with a homeless guy. He wanted to know why there's so many people out so early. I tell him "It's sxsw now asshole, get used to it." I walked around a while longer, found "BEER LAND" so i'd know where it was tomorrow. Bought a t-shirt that says "FUCK Y'ALL I'M FROM TEXAS" even though it's not true, thought about cool tattoos I could get... By 5 or 6 there was twice as many people out, and all bars were open with bands playing! It's kind of amazing, since there are 20 or so bars in a really small area. You can hear 20 different bands while walking down the street. Anyways I didn't have any plan to see anything that night, so I just jumped in and out of some bars, hung out at NUNO's (not officially part of SXSW) to listen to blues for a while. I did see a really good show that night! Some band was playing in the street, kind of ordinary kids' hardcore band & they played an Aesop rock cover. When they were playing their 4th or 5th song, a small black lady wearing a plastic king's crown walked up to the singer and took his microphone, started screaming while her friend wearing a NASCAR jacket danced and threw water onto people watching, the band played along really well though. So it was very fun, they played 3 songs that way. I thought it was really amazing! March 15th Next day is THURSDAY, my favorite day! In the morning it's very sunny and bright, so I sat by the river again reading newspaper, drinking cappuccino and getting suntan. That afternoon there's JAPAN NITE Day Party in a park. Bands were "HY", "ORESKABAND", "50 KAITENZ", "GO!GO!7188", "THE EMERALDS", some others I can't remember, plus also free beers!!! I got bored waiting for first band to start, and there's no good place to sit down, so I stand around drinking too many free beers. By the time ORESKABAND from OSAKA starts playing I feel kind of good! After their show one of them throws a T-shirt at me, but my body can't move fast and it hit me in the face and someone else took it! How embarrassing... But it's a very fun show, GO!GO!7188 was really good! THE EMERALDS played last though, and they're very bad...I saw them in New York almost 2 years ago now, and they played the same boring music, same bad jokes. So I left during their set. Later that night, it's GONER RECORDS/SHATTERED RECORDS showcase at BEER LAND! It's the show I came to this festival to see, so I went in there & played MORTAL KOMBAT for a while, then first band is BOSTON CHINKS!! They're very good, I was really excited to see them! Next is KING LOUIE! He's one-man band, plays drums with his feet & guitar with his hands. I never heard him before, but he's very good!!! Third is RYAN WONG solo I think, and Jay Reatard playing drums. Really good sound & loud!! Next is DIGITAL LEATHER!! They're really amazing so listen to them if you ever can! They're so loud I wanted to throw up, but made me feel really good. After DL I was feeling kind of tired & drunk and wanted to sit down, so I went outside. When BOSTON CHINKS started playing there was only 15 or so people in the bar, but when I tried to leave I found it had become really full! JAY REATARD is last, so I think they must all have come to see him. Anyways I try to get back towards the stage, but I can't get close enough to see very well because there's too many people. But anyways his show was really good! The band was original REATARDS I think, couldn't see guitarist or drummer so I don't really know. They played only songs from Jay R.'s solo album BLOOD VISIONS though. After 5 or so songs, someone gets dragged out of the bar in a headlock. Jay says "Three more songs!", plays two then jumps off the stage. Everyone yells "Fuck you Jay!!" etc. Hahaha... A really good show! 5 amazing bands! It was great! March 16th After that show I didn't really want to see any concert ever again. I thought it's a waste of time. So the next day I just sat in restaurants eating burritos & drinking free soda refills, went for a walk by the river, then I heard a sound of music coming from the other side!! I went to investigate & found a poster on the fence by the park that had some bands listed. "Very Boring" I thought, but the last one is PUBLIC ENEMY!!! I had to see them. Chuck D. made everybody say "Fuck George Bush!!!" First I thought, "Never say that about my president...", but then the second time he said it, I thought yeah fuck that guy, what a jerk and I said it too! Also he said fuck the vice president, secretary of state, some other people I can't remember but fuck all of them, I hate them now. Flava Flav brought his 2 sons on stage so we can say "Hello" to them but I'm confused so I say "Fuck you" again, then they play "911 Is a Joke" & "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" etc., A really good show. When I get back downtown it's 11 or so. I wanted to see LUMINOUS ORANGE also playing that night but they played at 9!!! But I can't regret it, PUBLIC ENEMY was so good. March 17th Next day is SATURDAY, the last day! There's a mini-festival in the park, I thought I'd better go. I was thirsty so I tried to buy a drink, can of beer here is $8 though! And they search your bags to make sure you don't bring in drinks from outside, really like a festival. Anyways, first 4 bands were cool, can't remember their names so sorry to those guys. The park was still really empty then, maybe 30 people by the stage. I sat underneath a tree so I wouldn't get sunburn. Kind of rude since I liked their music so I felt bad... but then was BORIS from Japan! It's my first time to see them so I'm excited. I want to stand next to the loudspeaker. Their show was very good but I want it to be louder!!! Next was RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS, punk rock from Austin, Texas with a singer who loves Iggy Pop. They say this show is the first of six they're gonna play that night. Hahaha... Anyways they're also very good, singer jumps from the stage and stands on top of girls who were laying in the sun, a really smart guy I think! Next is AGAINST ME, a very famous band right. I only heard a couple of their songs before so I'm excited, I really like their sound!! But last is MASTODON! Oh, their music is so good and loud. While I'm listening I start to think that every other band is dumb and boring like after Goner Records Showcase. They played for at least an hour, maybe more. I'm so happy the entire time, but eventually they have to stop of course. I walk back downtown afterwards, I suddenly remember it's ST. PATRICK'S DAY! All the music people on vacation, college kids, regular people from Austin, they're all out tonight to get drunk. People are packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the streets, and floor-to-ceiling in the bars! Even though I'm running out of money I thought I should also celebrate this holiday. So I went back to BEER LAND to drink 1 beer, then NUNO's to drink 2 more beer. After I hang out for a while listening to blues, it's almost midnight already! The last city bus to the greyhound station leaves around midnight so I had to go. I said, "Goodbye forever South by Southwest", but it's a lie!! I'll go again. I heard so much good music in such a short time!! Many times I didn't even know the name of the band I'm watching, but still it's so fun. Thank you all bands! Thanks MASTODON! Thanks Austin, TX! |
3月14日 フェスティバル当日、水曜日の朝６時に、グレイハウンド・バスでオースティンに到着した。俺は前日から丸１日バスに乗っていて、何も食べなかった。まぁ、バス・ステーションには自動販売機があったけど…。そりゃ、腹が減っていたぜ！オースティンは大学都市だし、24時間オープンのレストランがあるはずだ…。俺はグレイハウンド・バス駅を離れ、シティバスに乗って、街の中心に向かった。う〜ん、3丁目か４丁目でバスを降りて、バンドがプレイする予定のバーが6丁目のどこにあるか探そうと思った。でも、その途中でめちゃくちゃ腹が減ってしまった！俺はコンビニに立ち寄り、ハニーバン1つ、バナナ2本、24オンスのカプチーノを買った。自販機よりも少しはマシだし、カプチーノはとても美味しかった！それから6丁目に行った。もちろん、まだここには人っ子ひとりいないし、太陽は昇ったばかりだ。でも壁や街燈柱のあちこちに、コンサートや、パーティーのポスターが貼ってあった。こりゃ、良い兆候だと思った。 とにかくその後、俺は川まで歩いて、ベンチに座り、新聞を読んで、音楽が始まるのを待った。またお腹が空いたんで、ブリートが食べられるグッドなレストラン発見。もうお昼近かったので、何かやってないかなと6丁目に戻った。ワォ！さっきとは全く違って、突然、あちこちに多くの人々がいた！ほとんどが白人のキッズで、皆が皆、同じヘア・スタイルでスキニ―ジーンズ、やつらのガールフレンドたちも同じ服装…。一つの小さな場所にいる多くの人間が、皆同じに見えるなんて、何だか奇妙だよ。やつらはたぶん、バンドのメンバーでここにいるって思うと、やはり奇妙に感じた…。ほとんどのバーはまだ人がいないか閉まっていたけど、いくつかバンドがプレイしていた。俺はレゲエを聴くために座り、ホームレス男と話した。彼はこんな早い時間に、なぜ多くの人々が外に出ているのか知りたがった。俺は彼に「今はSXSWだぜ！バカなやつだ！もう慣れろよ…」と言った。俺はその辺を歩いて、BEER LANDを発見。これで明日すぐ場所がわかる。俺は"FUCK Y'ALL I'M FROM TEXAS"と書かれたTシャツを買った。俺はテキサス出身じゃないから正しくはないけど。クールなタトゥーにでもどうかなと考えた。 5時か6時には、さらに2倍の人々が外にいて、バンドの演奏と共に、全てのバーがオープンした！それはアメージングなことで、この小さな場所に20軒ほどのバーがひしめいて、ストリートを歩けば、違った20バンドを見られるってことだ。この日の俺は特に何かを見たいというプランはなく、いくつかのバーに入ってみた。NUNO’s（公式にはSXSWのバーじゃないんだけど）というバーでしばらくブルースを聴いてたむろした。でもその夜、本当に素晴らしいショーを見たんだ！あるバンドがストリートでプレイして、まぁ、よくあるキッズのハードコア・バンドで、彼らはイソップ・ロックのカバーをプレイした。４、５曲プレイしていたら、プラスティック製の王冠をかぶった小さな黒人女性がシンガーに歩み寄り、やつのマイクを奪い、NASCARジャケットを着た彼女の友人が踊っている間、叫び始めた。そして傍観者たちに水を投げた…。バンドの演奏も良かったし、とても面白かった。こんな感じで彼らは３曲プレイした。俺はすっごくアメージングだと思った！ 3月15日 翌日、木曜日は俺のお気に入りの日だぜ！朝はとても晴れて明るかったんで、俺は再び川辺に座り、新聞を読み、カプチーノを飲み、日焼けした。 昼には公園ではJAPAN NITE Day Partyがあり、HY、オレスカバンド、50回転ズ、GO!GO!7188、 THE EMERALDSがプレイ。他のバンドもいたけど覚えていない。それにビールがタダだぜ！最初のバンドが始まるのを待っているのに飽きたし、座るには良い場所がないし、タダのビールをたくさん飲んで立っていた。大阪出身のオレスカバンドのプレイが始まるころには、すっかり気分は良くなってたぜ！彼女たちのショー終了後、メンバーのひとりが俺にTシャツを投げたけど、体が俊敏に動かなくて、Tシャツは俺の顔にあたり、誰かが取っていきやがった！何て恥ずかしいことだろう。でもとても楽しいショーだった。GO!GO!7188は本当に良かった！THE EMERALDSは最後にプレイしたけど、とてもひどかった。２年前にニューヨークで彼らを見たけど、彼らはあの頃と同じつまらない音楽をプレイして、同じひどいジョークを言っていた。俺はショーの途中でそこを去った。 その日の夜、BEER LANDではGONER RECORDS/SHATTERED RECORDSのショーケースだった。このショーケースのため、俺はこのフェスに来たんだ！俺はBEER LAND に行き、しばらくMORTAL KOMBATで遊んでた。最初のバンドはBOSTON CHINKS！彼らはとっても素晴らしく、めちゃ興奮したぜ。次は KING LOUIE！彼はワンマンバンドだ。足でドラム、手でギターをプレイ。彼のことは知らなかったけど、すごく良かった。三番手は RYAN WONG、ソロだと思う。JAY REATARDがドラムをプレイしていた。素晴らしいサウンドでラウドだった！！次はDIGITAL LEATHER！彼らはアメージングだから、聴いたことない人はぜひ聴いて。彼らのライブはめちゃラウドで、吐きたくなった。でも気分を良くしてくれたぜ。DIGITAL LEATHERの後、少し疲れて、酔っ払ってしまい、座りたくなったんで外に出た。BOSTON CHINKSがここでライブを始めたときは、バーにはたった15人かそこらだったけど、俺が出ようとしたときには、人でいっぱいになっていた。JAY REATARDがトリだから皆彼を見に来たんだ。ステージの前方に引き返そうとしたけど、人が多すぎて、良く見える位置まで近づけなかった。でも彼のショーは良かったぜ！オリジナルREATARDSだと思ったんだけど、ギターもドラマーも見えなかったからはっきりしないんだ。彼らはJAY REATARDのソロ・アルバム『BLOOD VISIONS』からのみプレイ。5曲目かそこらで、誰かがヘッドロックでバーから引っ張り出されて、ジェイは「あと3曲プレイするぜ！」と言ったのに、2曲目でステージから飛び降りちゃったんだ。皆、「Fuck you！ ジェイ！」と叫んだ。ハハハハ…。とても素晴らしいショーだった。5つのアメージング・バンド！最高だぜ！ 3月16日 このショーの後、他のショーはもう見なくていい、無駄な時間だと思った。翌日、レストランでブリートを食べ、お代わり何杯でもOKなソーダを飲んで、川沿いを歩いた。すると、何やら音楽が聴こえてくるではないか！俺は公園のフェンスに貼ってあるポスターを見つけ調べた。リストされたバンドはつまんねぁ〜って感じだけど、ラストはPUBLIC ENEMYだ！見なきゃならん！Chuck Dは皆に「Fuck！ジョージ・ブッシュ！！！」と言わせた。俺は最初「大統領について何も言うもんか…」と思ったけど、Chuck Dがまたそう言ったとき、「ああ、確かにヤツはFuckで、マヌケだぜ」と思い、俺もそう言った！彼は副大統領、国務長官、その他のやつら、俺は覚えてないけど、そいつらについてもFuckと言った。ともかくやつらは皆、Fuckだぜ、俺は今、やつらが嫌いだ…。Flava Flavが息子２人をステージに連れてきて、彼たちに「ハロー」と言うはずが俺は何だか混乱しちゃって「Fuck You」と再び言ってしまった。彼らは『911 Is a Joke』 と『Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos』などをプレイ。本当に素晴らしいショーだった。11時頃に街に戻ると、その夜、ルミナス・オレンジもプレイしていて見たかったけど、彼らは９時にプレイだった！でも後悔はしてない、それくらいPUBLIC ENEMYは素晴らしかった…。 3月１７日 翌日は土曜日、フェスティバル最後の日だ。公園ではミニ・フェスティバルがあって、行くべきだと思った。喉が渇いて、飲み物を買おうとしたけど、ビール缶がここじゃ８ドルだぜ！やつらは外から飲み物を持ち込まないように調べているんだ。まさにフェスティバルってわけだよ。最初の４バンドはクールだったけど、彼らに悪いがバンド名を思い出せない。公園はまだガラガラで、ステージ近くに30人くらいしかいなかった。俺は木の下に座ってた。そうすりゃ日焼けしないし。彼らの音楽は良かったけど、まぁ、彼らに対してはちょっと失礼だよな。だから悪いなと思った。でも次は日本のボリスだ！彼らを見るのは初めてで、とっても興奮したぜ。ラウドなスピーカーの隣に立って見たかった。彼らのショーは良かったけど、もっとラウドだったら良かったのに！次はテキサス・オースティン出身のRIVERBOAT GAMBLERSというパンク・ロックで、シンガーはイギ―・ポップを愛している。彼らが言うには、このショーはその夜６つある彼らのショーの最初のやつだって、ハハハ…。とにかく彼らは皆、とても良かった。シンガーはステージからジャンプして、太陽の下に寝転がっているガールズの前に立った。スマートなヤツだと思うぜ！ 次はAGAINST ME、とても有名なバンドだ。前に数曲聴いたことがあったので、とても興奮した。彼らのサウンドは気に入った！でもラストはMASTODONだ！ああ、彼らの音楽は本当に素晴らしくてラウドだ。彼らを聴いている間、他のバンドは皆くだらなくてつまらんと思い始めた。あのGoner Recordsのショーケースの後みたいに。彼らは少なくとも一時間はプレイ、たぶんそれ以上プレイしたかも。その間ずっと、俺はすごくハッピーだった。でも勿論、彼らもプレイを終えなくちゃならない…。その後、街に戻り、俺は突然、今日はセントパトリック・デーであることを思い出した！休暇中の音楽ファン、学生、オースティンの人々…、彼ら皆、酔っ払うために外に出てきてる。ストリートは人々でいっぱい、バーの中も人々がひしめきあっていた。もう金がなくなりかけていたけど、このホリデーを祝うべきだと思い、BEER LANDに戻り、ビールを１杯飲んだ。それからNUNO'sでもう２杯飲んだ。ブルースを聴きながら、しばらくブラブラしていると、もう真夜中になっていた。グレイハウンド駅行きの最終のシティバスが真夜中に出る。もう行かなくてはならない。俺は「永遠にさようなら、SXSW！」と言った。けど、それはウソだ！俺はまた来るぜ。短い期間でたくさんのグッド・ミュージックを聴いた。多くは名前さえ知らないバンドだったけど、それも楽しかった。皆、ありがとう！ありがとう、MASTODON! ありがとう、オースティン、テキサス！ |
